Groupon, Tibet, and You

While the mind is untamed it can only cause trouble. If anger, greed or arrogance spring up they will take over the situation.
We recognize that a multi-billion dollar corporation decided to support the Tibetan people’s struggle and help The Tibet Fund raise urgently needed funds. The Superbowl broadcast drew unprecedented attention to the issue of Tibet at a critical time in the history of the cause. Tibetans have spent 50 years in exile from their homeland. While they have succeeded in establishing a democratic system of government and creating a settlement system to care for the refugees, continuing poverty is taking its toll on the communities in India and Nepal.

Cliffnotes of #IMS10
by Scott on Oct.10, 2010, under Show & Tell, Social Media
For those outside of marketing I thank you with putting up with the 100+ tweets I relentlessly produced (and for those that are I hope they helped). This year’s Inbound Marketing Summit was terrific and had plenty of value for all of the returning attendees. Last year marked the height of the social media revolution, with many moralities predicted for outbound practices and businesses. The way people are consuming information is indeed changing, but culture is still lagging technology in regards to social media; many companies are failing to effectively use it to communicate in its full potential. The values of creating compelling content, authenticity, effectively using metrics, and interaction with the community were evangelized. No one except the sales people were telling us it would be easy.
The social knowledge bank at Gillette was well stocked, and as an information glutton, I often found myself engorged with the vast amount of intelligent views and experience I was being bombarded with. Branching beyond the regular marketing community, I was exposed to how the military, state government, nonprofit, and public relations sectors are using social technology to achieve their goals. It was refreshing to see a new perspective and theories on the using same social tools.
If there was one unspoken theme among the marketers it was that we are taking on more and more responsibilities as the speed at which businesses are conducted accelerates. Businesses and brands need to react faster than bureaucracies and committees are capable of operating at. It requires a certain degree of freedom and trust from the decision makers of the company for social creatives to achieve maximum results. Being a Swiss army knife for your business can be a blessing and a curse, but it is crucial to operate on social schedules in addition to business hours.

I jumped on the chance to play in the large international sandbox that is Paul the Psychic Octopus’ Fan Page. I also jumped on the chance to ruffle some feathers (as I am apt to do).

Another entry for the Holy Taco photoshop contest today. This one was inspired when I discovered that the director for the newest movie is David Slade, who also directed (a vampire favorite of mine), 30 Days of Night.

Inside the Mind of an Unorthodox Marketer
by Scott on Jun.26, 2010, under Facebook, Show & Tell, Social Media
Re-purposing of content is a very popular activity in the digital social circles, and much of what ends up being shared the most are new spins or “remixes” of existing content. Adding one’s personality and vision digitally to bits of media to create something entirely new is a new style of art, that most everyone can participate in (and be seen), and is meant to be shared. Bringing more individual opinions to our media not only makes it more personal (and often more clever), but it creates a much more communal (and participatory) experience than traditional media ever could deliver. Not every remix will create the next meme, and that’s rarely the motivation behind the best content. Sometimes it’s a way to be heard on an issue that’s important (crowd-sourced propaganda), but for me it’s most often simply an expression of creativity. I thought of something that was: vivid, catching, funny, sarcastic, witty, or sometimes just weird, and I create a sharable digital image that shares my vision with anyone interested. Digital manipulation of content and creativity software have unlocked the inner-artist in many a geek, it certainly has for me!

If you can’t tell these collection posts are coming naturally for me now, allowing me to put all my best efforts into more formal written pieces. In the works is my long delayed Libertarian piece, as well as taking another crack at the unfinished pieces.

Show & Tell

Came across lots of cool stuff today that both entertain and inspire, and I know that not everyone follows every post I put out over the course of the day. Instead of losing all these finds to the depths of Facebook or where the Fail Whales roam, I’ll try to periodically gather all the shiniest things I find.
