Leave a Comment :Katana, Velociraptor more...30 Days of Twilight
by Scott on Jun.29, 2010, under Geekhood, Movies, Show & Tell, Social Media
Another entry for the Holy Taco photoshop contest today. This one was inspired when I discovered that the director for the newest movie is David Slade, who also directed (a vampire favorite of mine), 30 Days of Night.

Update: I won the contest with this entry, thanks to the support from my friends!
Stumbled across a photoshop contest today, revolving around the premise of making the upcoming Twilight movie interesting (to a non-rabbid fan). I had fun with this one!

The Bat Cave

Batman has no superpowers but 8 monitors
Decided to make this a post, as my desk always makes the tours of the Cambridge office at Gilbane, mostly due to my severe case of geekhood. This is a setup I have just mastered at work (I have a different one at home), the recent acquisition of a tool that allowed me to use a single (trackball) mouse over the 3 separate monitors. Supergeek feature? I also share the clipboard between computers (for copying & pasting). The advantages of this setup, is that it uses equipment you probably already have: a “business-class” desktop PC & a current generation laptop. While neither are heavy hitters, I have 2 separate CPUs at my disposal & 7GB of RAM. When you run office software, 10 tabs of internet, an Adobe program (or 2), and a hefty chunk of memory for a social media vehicle you need this kind of muscle. The only thing you may need to buy for this would be another monitor (the extra monitor shown is very small, perhaps 14″ and is fine as the SM stream screen). Using the iPod as a touch interface? Rarely used, but I need to repurpose it as it is rapidly deteriorating towards 3 years old.

Update:
I have found another program to add to the mix, which allows me to remotely control my home PC (this is advantageous for uploads & video editing). The Middle screen now features a 3rd PC, and I now officially have a crush on my workstation.

Behind the Hype of Final Fantasy XIII Part 1
by Scott on Mar.15, 2010, under Geekhood, Show & Tell
Anyone who’s connected with me over social media should know by now I am a huge fan of the series, so to say this won’t be biased would be a bold faced lie. That being said, this installment is designed to be approachable to a new audience, and also raises the bar in using gaming as an art form. As such an entertainment milestone, I felt the key achievements should be highlighted.

Video Gaming As An Escape Of Reality
by Scott on Mar.06, 2010, under Geekhood, Movies, Show & Tell
Updated with more resources 3/15/10
The past few years, many folks have analyzed the obsession, and apparent addiction some people show towards video gaming. After recently coming across yet another thought-provoking viewpoint that offered insights on this new cultural phenomenon, I felt a need to share my favorites. I have been known to play some PS3 now and again, though the time I log in now pales in comparison to the times of my carefree youth. I never have “fallen” to the kind of depths illustrated by some of these subjects, but I do find the sociology-technology interaction fascinating. I’ve gathered my favorite resources which helped me see quite a few new angles on this new cultural phenomenon.
Though often over looked as a niche appeal, MMO games are a form of social media in themselves (large networks of people socializing and interacting). Some of these networks are so complex as to have created “real” economies which actually begin interacting with the actual global economy. Furthermore, they have proven to be much more profitable (and addictive) than conventional social media networks. It’s hard to not find these developing alternate realities fascinating, and the people living in them so very unique that they seem almost alien to the non-gamer. Part of the selection process of the perspectives was I wanted to only include those who did not condemn the differences of these people, but tried to understand, convey, and “humanize” their subjects. Coincidentally, all of these can be viewed online at your leisure…

A Tablet Among Novelty Sized iPods
by Scott on Feb.10, 2010, under Geekhood
Like many computer geeks I was vastly underwhelmed by the iPad. It will sport the guts of an iPhone and the be the size of the netbook. To me, that’s like marketing deodorant as:
Strong enough for a woman, Made for a man
Needless to say, the iPad was a huge let down for me, however when I stumbled across the ADAM by Notion Ink I had the polar opposite reaction.
